A convergence of military posturing, collapsed diplomatic channels, and accelerated nuclear enrichment has pushed both nations to the brink of direct conflict — with consequences that would reshape the Middle East, global energy markets, and defence procurement priorities for a generation.
This analysis examines the current threat environment, the most probable escalation pathways, and the operational and commercial implications for governments and defence enterprises operating in and around the Gulf region.
Iran's nuclear programme has crossed several red lines that previous US administrations considered triggers for military action. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed in early 2026 that Iran is enriching uranium to 83.7% purity — a fraction below weapons-grade — at its fortified Fordow facility. Stockpiles of enriched material now exceed 30 times the quantity required for a single nuclear device.
Simultaneously, Iran has expanded its ballistic missile arsenal, with the Kheibar Shekan and Fattah-2 hypersonic variants now assessed as operational.
